About Thumper | |
|
|
Thumper is a wonderful special Maine Coon Russian Blue mix. She has cerebellar hypoplasia and tremoring when she moves, she also has microphthalmic eyes so her vision isn't really good but she doesn't let it curb her enthusiasm. She plays and plays and charges all over the place.
We will be taking her to the Eye Specialists soon, to see if there are also cataracts and if anything can be done. She follows us around and enjoys playing with the other cats but she also knows how to keep herself occupied. She would be best with feline company as she does really enjoy it but it would be best they are wise and understanding, because she does have different behavior than most cats - like sometimes with her tremors she runs in circles! She's a great kitty and enjoys people and human contact and gentle dogs.
Update: Thumper saw the Eye Specialist Vet on 10/22 - we are so excited, it looks like the congenital cataracts are showing early signs of lens resorption. So we are trying to improve her retinal mapping by keeping her pupils dilated in this critical developing period, and getting her exposed to lots of images, to help her maximize her quality of vision. Today when we brought her home (with her eyes still dilated from exam) she was having a blast and seemed to be enjoying seeing more! There is to be a follow up visit with Eye Specialists in 5 weeks or so.
Update 11/15: The original drops we were using for Thumper's dilation weren't keeping the pupils dilated as long as vet expected so we are now trying another drop type and its doing much better. She and Logan have a blast playing together. Tentatively we plan on 11/3 for next Eye Specialist's apt.
Update: Thumper saw the Eye Specialist Vet on 11/25 - The cataracts are not significantly changed since her prvious exam, however with the dilation thearapy the Vet can see clear areas of peripheral lens that allows a limited view of her retinas, which means since the first 4-6 months of life are ctitical for reitnal mapping the more thumper can see during this time period the better. So we are to continue the dilation therapy for the next two months. And there is still hopes the cataracts will shrink as sometimes it happens all at once not gradually.
On a motor skills level Thumper is also doing better! She is learning to keep her back legs under her more and doesn't tend to run in circles now. And she is attempting and learning to climb on more things now.
